25 Money-Saving Hacks Every Big Family Should Know

September 8, 2025 · In: Frugal Living, Lifestyle

Raising a big family is beautiful…but let’s be real, it can also be really expensive. From the grocery bill to family outings to everyday household needs, it feels like money disappears faster than you can say “snack time.” The good news? There are so many practical, doable ways to save without feeling deprived.

Here are 25 money-saving hacks that can help stretch your budget while still giving your family the life they deserve.

Grocery & Food Hacks

  1. Buy meat in bulk and freezer pack it – Purchase from Costco, Sam’s, or even a local butcher. (Full blog post coming soon)
  2. Cook once, eat twice (or three times) – Make double batches of family favorites and freeze leftovers for busy nights.
  3. Shop loss leaders – Base your weekly menu on the best sales, not cravings.
  4. Join grocery store loyalty programs – Digital coupons add up fast.
  5. Embrace store brands – Most taste the same, and the savings are huge.
  6. Meal plan religiously – Even a rough plan keeps you from last-minute takeout splurges.
  7. Start a garden – Even just herbs and salad greens save money. (Full blog post coming soon on how to start a money-saving garden without overspending.)
  8. Stock up during sales – If pasta or canned goods are dirt cheap, buy enough for a few months.

Household & Cleaning Hacks

  1. DIY cleaning supplies – Vinegar, baking soda, and lemon do wonders.
  2. Use cloth over paper – Cloth napkins, microfiber rags, even cloth diapers can save big over time.
  3. Buy used first – Check Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores, and curb alerts before buying new.
  4. Ditch single-use items – Invest in reusable water bottles, sandwich bags, and straws.

Clothing & Kid Hacks

  1. Buy off-season – Snag coats in spring and swimsuits in fall at a fraction of the price.
  2. Clothing swaps – Trade with friends or host a swap night.
  3. Secondhand treasures – Consignment shops and online resale apps are goldmines.
  4. Uniform your kids – Not literal uniforms, but keep their wardrobe simple and mix-and-matchable.

Utility & Home Hacks

  1. Turn off “energy vampires” – Unplug chargers and electronics not in use.
  2. Set thermostat boundaries – A few degrees difference can save hundreds yearly.
  3. Wash laundry in cold water – Clothes last longer, and the savings are real.
  4. Line dry when you can – Especially in sunny Florida!

Fun & Family Hacks

  1. Free family fun – Parks, beaches, hikes, library events. They cost nothing.
  2. Discount passes – Zoo or museum memberships often pay for themselves in two visits.
  3. Pack snacks & water – Avoid the overpriced concession trap.
  4. DIY gifts – Homemade bread, cookies, or soap are thoughtful and frugal.
  5. Teach kids about money early – Give them responsibility with small budgets.

Saving money with a big family doesn’t mean living small… it means being smart and intentional. Every little change adds up, and before you know it, those small savings can make a big difference in your budget.
