There was a time when I thought I needed the perfect cleaning schedule to keep my home running smoothly.
You know the ones…color-coded, hour-by-hour, every inch of the house spotless at all times.
And then I became a mom… and realized pretty quickly that wasn’t realistic.
As a homeschooling mom of three (with one still in the toddler stage), I don’t have unlimited time, energy, or quiet.
What I do have are a few simple routines that keep our home from feeling overwhelming.
Not perfect. Not spotless. But manageable…and that’s the goal.
Here are the routines that truly keep our home running.
1. One Load of Laundry Every Day
Laundry used to pile up so fast it felt impossible to catch up.
Now, I just do one load a day.
Everyone in our home has an assigned laundry day, which keeps things simple and predictable.
I’m not folding five loads at once or spending my entire Saturday buried in clothes.
It’s just one load, start to finish.
And that small habit alone has made a huge difference.

2. Clean One Room a Day
Instead of trying to clean the entire house in one day (which never worked), I focus on just one room.
That’s it.
As a mom with limited time during the day, this keeps cleaning manageable and realistic.
Some days it’s the kitchen. Other days it’s bathrooms, bedrooms, or the living room.
It doesn’t take long, and it keeps everything from getting out of control.

3. Grocery Shop Once a Week (Midweek)
We grocery shop once a week—usually in the middle of the week.
This has been a game changer for our family.
It allows our weekends to stay focused on family time instead of running errands.
No last-minute store trips. No weekend chaos.
Just a simple rhythm that works.

4. Clean Out the Fridge Before Grocery Day
This is one of those routines that’s always kind of happening…
But I make sure to do a full clean-out either the day before grocery shopping or the morning of.
I throw out anything old, wipe down shelves if needed, and take stock of what we actually have.
It helps reduce waste and makes putting groceries away so much easier.

5. Clean Out the Car Once a Week
This one is for my sanity.
Once a week, I clean out the car.
Nothing fancy—I’m not doing a full detail every time.
I take out all the trash, wipe up any spills, and occasionally use a small handheld vacuum (especially for my toddler’s car seat… because snacks 🙃).
It’s a small reset, but it makes a big difference in how I feel.

6. Get Outside Every Day With the Kids
This might not sound like a homemaking task—but it absolutely is.
We try to get outside every day:
- before starting school
- and again after lunch
It helps the kids burn energy, improves focus during school time, and honestly just resets everyone’s mood.
A calmer home starts with kids who have had time to move, play, and breathe.

The Goal Isn’t Perfection—It’s Peace
These routines aren’t complicated.
They’re not aesthetic.
They’re not “Pinterest perfect.”
But they work.
They keep my home from feeling overwhelming, and they give me a rhythm to fall back on when life feels busy.
If you’re in a season of life where everything feels like too much, start small.
Pick one of these and build from there.
Because a home doesn’t need perfection to run well—it just needs simple systems that work for your life.
