If you’ve been following along as I prepare for our homeschool year, you already know that my youngest loves to sit at the table while her older brothers work. She’s not quite ready for formal lessons, but she absolutely wants to be included.
Instead of trying to force a traditional preschool curriculum, I’ve been creating simple, hands-on activities that help build foundational math skills while still feeling like play.
These printables are exactly what we’ll be using throughout the year during our morning homeschool time, and I’m sharing them here for free in case they’re helpful for your little learner too!
Number Mats
One of my favorite activities is this simple number play dough mat.
Each page focuses on a single number and includes several different ways for children to interact with it.

Your child can:
- Roll small play dough balls.
- Count them onto a ten frame.
- Practice number recognition.
- Trace the numeral several times.
Because young children learn best by touching and manipulating objects, I wanted this activity to be more than just another tracing worksheet.
Two Versions Included
I created two versions of these number mats so they can grow with your child.
Beginning Learners
The first version includes dots already placed inside the ten frame. Children simply place one play dough ball (or another manipulative) on each dot while counting aloud. This helps reinforce one-to-one correspondence and makes counting much less overwhelming for beginners.
Ready for a Challenge
The second version uses an empty ten frame. Children have to count and place each object independently, making it a great next step once they’re comfortable with the dotted version.
You can also substitute the play dough with:
- Mini erasers
- Pom-poms
- Buttons
- Counting bears
- Small blocks
- Dry-erase markers (if laminated)
Shape Tracing Worksheets
We’re also beginning to learn our basic shapes.
Each worksheet includes:
- One large shape to trace.
- Two smaller shapes for additional practice.
- The shape name to trace at the bottom.

These pages give children plenty of opportunities to recognize each shape while also strengthening the fine motor skills they’ll eventually need for handwriting.
We’ll probably laminate many of these pages so my daughter can use dry-erase markers and practice them over and over again.
Big and Small Farm Animal Worksheets
Since my daughter is currently obsessed with farm animals, I created a simple “Big and Small” activity using animals she already recognizes.
Children compare the two pictures and identify which animal is big and which one is small.
Simple comparison activities like this help introduce early math vocabulary while encouraging observation and critical thinking.

One of my favorite things about creating my own printables is how easy they are to customize. Today it’s farm animals, but later I can swap the theme for pumpkins in the fall, snowmen in the winter, flowers in the spring, or beach-themed activities during the summer.
Using themes that match your child’s current interests is an easy way to keep learning fun and engaging.
Why We Love Simple Preschool Activities
At this age, my goal isn’t to rush academics.
I simply want my daughter to build confidence, strengthen her fine motor skills, and enjoy being part of our homeschool day alongside her brothers.
Most of these activities only take a few minutes to complete, but they’re packed with opportunities to practice counting, shape recognition, comparison skills, and hand-eye coordination…all while feeling more like play than school.
If your preschooler likes to be included while older siblings are learning, I hope these free printables help make your homeschool mornings just a little bit easier.
